This insect is primarily recognized as a pest in warmer Mediterranean climates, where its population densities can rise significantly. It is characterized by its adaptability to arid conditions and its tendency to aggregate in open grassy habitats and cultivated fields.

The host range of Aiolopus strepens includes various cereals, forage crops, and sometimes horticultural vegetables. It is particularly damaging to young cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and maize. In addition to agricultural crops, the grasshopper feeds on wild grasses, often moving from uncultivated field margins into the crop area as the vegetation dries up during the summer months.

The life cycle of this grasshopper consists of an egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in the soil in clusters, enclosed in a protective pod, which allows them to survive unfavorable environmental conditions. The damage caused by Aiolopus strepens involves the defoliation of plants, as both nymphs and adults consume leaf tissue and soft stem tissues. This feeding behavior stunts plant growth and reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the crop.
