Albulina orbitulus
Albulina orbitulus
Description
Albulina orbitulus, commonly known as the Alpine Blue, is a butterfly species within the Lycaenidae family. While often considered a subject of interest for entomologists rather than primary agricultural pests, in specific regional cultivation, their larvae can cause economic damage to leguminous seed crops by feeding on flower buds and developing seeds.
Taxonomically, the species belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Lycaenidae. Their developmental biology is noted for its high degree of specialisation and interaction with ant species, a trait known as myrmecophily, which provides larvae with protection against predators and parasitoids during their growth stages on host plants.
The larvae primarily target species of the genera Astragalus and Oxytropis. When these or related leguminous crops are cultivated, the larvae consume reproductive structures. This herbivory results in failed fertilization of flowers, reduced pod formation, and ultimately a decrease in harvestable seed yield, which is particularly detrimental in specialized seed production programs.
The life cycle is tightly synchronized with the blooming periods of their host plants. Overwintering occurs typically as larvae in the leaf litter or soil, followed by pupation in spring or early summer. The emergence of adults aligns with the availability of nectar sources, and their eggs are deposited directly onto or near the target host plant, ensuring an immediate food source upon hatching.
- Feeding on floral buds and developing ovules.
- Significant loss in seed production efficiency.
- Weakening of plant resistance to secondary infections.
- Interactions with soil micro-ecosystems and ant colonies.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to handle potential infestations. Crop monitoring during the budding stage is crucial for early detection. Agronomic practices, such as the destruction of wild leguminous weed hosts near production fields, significantly reduce the resident population. Chemical control should only be utilized when thresholds are exceeded, emphasizing the selection of insecticides that minimize harm to pollinators.
