Strawberry sawfly

Allantus cinctus

Description

The strawberry sawfly (Allantus cinctus) is a member of the Tenthredinidae family within the order Hymenoptera. While often overlooked by amateur gardeners, this pest can cause significant damage to strawberry plants if left unchecked. Its larvae are known for their voracious appetite for foliage, which can weaken the vigor of the entire patch.

The primary host plants for this insect are garden strawberries and various wild species of the Rosaceae family. The adults are small, wasp-like insects, while the larvae appear as small, green, caterpillar-like organisms that blend into the foliage, making them difficult to detect until substantial damage has already occurred.

Regarding their biology, these sawflies typically overwinter as prepupae in the soil or within decaying plant debris. As the temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs. The eggs are inserted into the leaf tissues of the host plant, often resulting in small, necrotic spots that serve as an early indicator of infestation before the larvae hatch.

The harm caused by the strawberry sawfly manifests as skeletal damage to the leaves. The larvae consume the leaf tissue between the veins, eventually leaving nothing but the skeletal structure of the leaf. This reduction in leaf area directly impacts the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis, leading to reduced fruit yields and smaller berry size, weakening the plants for the following season.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Maintaining clean gardening practices, such as removing debris and weeds, helps destroy overwintering sites. Periodic monitoring of the lower leaf surfaces during the growing season is essential. In cases of high infestation, targeted insecticide applications are recommended, ensuring the products used are labeled as safe for strawberry crops and adhering strictly to pre-harvest intervals.
