The genus Alliphis belongs to the family Eviphididae (order Mesostigmata). These soil-dwelling gamasid mites are often found in environments rich in organic matter. While often associated with predatory habits, their presence in agricultural systems can lead to complications for plant health, particularly in sensitive greenhouse environments.

These mites typically thrive in moist, nutrient-rich substrates such as manure, compost, and greenhouse soils. Their ability to survive in decaying organic material allows them to maintain large populations that can easily spread throughout a greenhouse facility via irrigation water, human activity, or through phoresy on various insects.

The life cycle of Alliphis consists of the egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and the adult. They possess a high reproductive rate under warm and humid conditions, which are standard in modern intensive cropping systems. This rapid generation turnover makes it difficult to manage outbreaks once they are well-established.

The damage caused by Alliphis is primarily related to the mechanical stress they impose on the root zones of seedlings. Furthermore, they are known to act as vectors for various plant pathogens, including fungi and bacteria. By damaging root tissue, they create entry points for these pathogens, leading to stunted growth and potential crop loss.

Effective management strategies include rigorous sanitation practices, such as the sterilization of potting media and maintaining optimal moisture levels to discourage pest buildup. Integrated pest management (IPM) protocols should emphasize preventative measures, while chemical interventions with appropriate acaricides should be used as a last resort to minimize impact on beneficial organisms.
