Description

The alder leafhopper (lat. Alnetoidia) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Cicadellidae. These small insects are specialized pests that are closely associated with woody plants, primarily those of the genus Alnus (alder).

This pest mainly affects various species of alder, including black and grey alder. In cases of high population density, it may spread to other nearby deciduous trees, causing stress and reducing the overall health and ornamental value of the forest or garden stands.

The biological life cycle of this insect consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. The pest typically overwinters in the egg stage, which are laid by females into the bark tissues or buds of the host plant. In spring, the hatching nymphs begin feeding on the sap of young leaves, progressively developing into adults.

Damage is characterized by the sucking of cell sap from the foliage, which leads to the appearance of white spots, leaf discoloration, and premature leaf drop.
