The Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum) is a significant ectoparasite belonging to the Ixodidae family. While primarily categorized as an animal pest, its impact on pastoral agriculture is profound. Understanding its lifecycle is essential for agricultural managers aiming to maintain healthy and productive grazing land for livestock production.

Systematically, this mite is part of the Parasitiformes order. It is known for its ability to thrive in humid, warm environments, where high grass provides the perfect cover for host-seeking behavior. The species is well-documented for its role in transmitting various pathogens that affect cattle and can lead to severe physiological stress in herds.

The biological cycle follows a three-host pattern, involving larvae, nymphs, and adults. Each life stage requires a blood meal to progress, which directly interferes with the growth and health of the grazing livestock. Eggs are typically laid in the environment, and the tick population density is heavily influenced by the microclimate found within pastures and forage fields.

The economic damage caused by the Gulf Coast tick is linked to poor weight gain in cattle, damaged hides, and significant veterinary costs. Infestations lead to severe irritation, which causes animals to spend more time scratching and less time grazing, thereby reducing the feed conversion efficiency and negatively affecting the overall utilization of the available biomass on the pasture.
