Description

The Tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum), belonging to the order Urodela and family Ambystomatidae, is primarily an insectivorous predator. However, within intensive agricultural settings, such as nurseries and high-humidity greenhouses, it is occasionally recognized as an incidental pest due to its burrowing habits.

From an agronomic perspective, the concern lies in the salamander's capacity to disrupt the integrity of the soil structure. These amphibians thrive in moist environments, and when they infiltrate cultivated beds, their tunneling activity can physically displace the roots of young plants and seedlings.

The biological cycle consists of an aquatic larval stage followed by a terrestrial adult stage. Adults are nocturnal, actively seeking out cool, moist habitats to avoid dehydration. These conditions are frequently found in irrigated agricultural plots, making them attractive corridors for the movement of these amphibians during the nocturnal hours.

Damage to crops is mainly mechanical. By digging burrows through root zones, salamanders cause air pockets that prevent roots from absorbing water and nutrients effectively. This leads to stunted growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms, and in extreme cases, the mortality of sensitive greenhouse crops.

Management strategies focus on exclusion and habitat modification rather than chemical eradication, as these species are often ecologically significant and sometimes protected. Effective measures include installing fine-mesh fencing around sensitive areas, improving drainage to reduce soil moisture levels, and practicing site sanitation to remove debris that serves as daytime shelter.
