Grape bostrichid

Taxonomic position. Amphicerus anobioides belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae, commonly known as auger beetles or false powder-post beetles. This species is recognized as a serious wood-boring pest that primarily attacks perennial woody plants, including grapevines and fruit trees.

Host plants and damage. This pest primarily targets grapevines, but also affects fig, apple, and various nut-bearing trees. The adult beetles cause damage by boring into the base of young shoots, petioles, and rachises. This feeding activity results in the wilting, drying, and eventual breaking of the affected parts, leading to significant yield loss and structural damage to the vines.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae bore deep into the wood of the host plant, constructing extensive galleries and feeding on the internal tissues. Adult beetles overwinter inside the wood galleries, emerging in the spring to mate and lay eggs in suitable wood substrates. Their cryptic life style makes them particularly difficult to manage using surface-applied pesticides.

Harmfulness. Severe infestations can cause the dieback of entire vine cordons or even the death of younger, less resilient plants. The tunnels created by the beetles weaken the structure of the plant and facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi, which further exacerbate the health decline of the affected plantation.

Management practices. Control measures require an integrated approach:

• Sanitation: Pruning and burning infested plant material during the dormant season.
• Monitoring: Observing the vineyard for signs of beetle emergence and boring activity.
• Chemical control: Applying systemic insecticides during the peak activity period of adults.
• Cultural practices: Maintaining healthy vine vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
