The Copper Underwing (Amphipyra pyramidea) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is widely distributed across Europe and parts of Asia, frequently encountered in gardens, woodlands, and orchards where it acts as a significant foliar pest.
This species is polyphagous, meaning its larvae feed on a broad variety of host plants. Preferred hosts include various deciduous trees such as oaks, beeches, and fruit trees like apple, pear, and plum. In cases of high population density, they can also cause noticeable damage to shrubbery and ornamental plants.
The life cycle of the Copper Underwing typically consists of one generation per year. The species overwinters as an egg laid on the bark of host trees. In the spring, larvae emerge and begin feeding on developing buds and leaves. As they mature, they descend to the ground to pupate in a loose cocoon within the soil or under leaf litter, emerging as adults in mid-to-late summer.
The damage caused by the larvae is primarily defoliation. Young caterpillars skeletonize the leaves, while later instars consume entire leaf blades, leaving only the primary veins. Severe infestations can result in the loss of plant vigor, reduced growth rates, and increased susceptibility to secondary environmental stressors or diseases.
Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Maintaining tree health through proper pruning and clearing debris around the trunk helps reduce overwintering sites. For large infestations, the use of targeted insecticides or biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis can be applied when the larvae are in their early stages of development.
