Ampulex

The genus Ampulex belongs to the family Ampulicidae within the order Hymenoptera. These are specialized solitary wasps, often referred to as jewel wasps. In the context of agronomy, they are primarily known for their unique hunting behavior, specifically targeting cockroaches, which can be a nuisance in greenhouses and storage facilities.

From an agricultural standpoint, Ampulex is not a primary pest of cultivated plants, as adults do not feed on plant tissues. However, their presence in large numbers can indicate an underlying infestation of cockroach populations. Their activity is localized and usually does not pose a direct threat to crop yield, but they can be considered an ecological indicator in controlled environments.

The life cycle of these wasps is highly specialized. A female wasp hunts for a cockroach, stings it with precision to deliver a neurotoxin that modifies the behavior of the host. She then lays an egg on the host and hides it in a burrow. The larva eventually consumes the host internally, completing its development within the protected environment of the burrow.

The economic impact of Ampulex is negligible in terms of direct damage to crops. Their pest status is generally secondary, relating to their influence on the local microfauna. The main issue for farmers arises when nests are established in sensitive areas, or if the presence of the wasps becomes a health and safety concern for agricultural workers in greenhouses.

Integrated management of these wasps, if deemed necessary, focuses on preventive measures to maintain the integrity of agricultural facilities:

• Eliminate the primary food source by controlling cockroach populations.
• Seal cracks, crevices, and entry points in greenhouses and storage sheds.
• Ensure proper waste management to prevent nesting site creation.
• Use physical exclusion techniques, such as fine-mesh screening, to prevent wasp entry.
