Description

Systematic position: The golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, and family Ampullariidae. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive invasive species globally. Historically, it has been referred to by the synonym Ampullarium canaliculatus, which is still frequently encountered in older literature.

Affected crops: This pest primarily targets rice (Oryza sativa), posing a severe threat to food security in rice-growing regions. Beyond rice, it feeds on taro, water spinach, and various aquatic ornamental plants. Its broad diet allows it to persist in various wetland environments.

Biology and lifecycle: The snail is highly prolific, with females laying batches of pink eggs above the water level on plants or structures. The eggs hatch into small snails that immediately begin feeding. These snails can survive dry spells by burying themselves in soil and becoming dormant, which facilitates their spread across new agricultural areas.

Nature of damage: Golden apple snails use their rasping mouthparts to consume young rice seedlings. They can destroy entire fields within a short period, leading to massive replanting costs and total crop failure if left uncontrolled. The damage is most severe during the first few weeks after transplanting or direct seeding.

Control measures: Managing golden apple snail populations requires a combination of strategies:

  • Installing fine mesh screens at water inlets to prevent the entry of snails and their egg masses into paddies.
  • Manual collection and destruction of the distinctive pink egg clusters and adult snails.
  • Application of targeted molluscicides according to local environmental regulations.
  • Cultural practices, including deep plowing and leveling of fields to eliminate habitats for aestivating snails.
