Amrasca

Amrasca is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These small, sap-sucking insects are recognized as major pests in agricultural settings worldwide, particularly affecting broad-leaved crops in tropical and subtropical regions. Their ability to reproduce rapidly under favorable weather conditions makes them difficult to control.

The host range of Amrasca is extensive, including vital agricultural crops such as cotton, okra, eggplant, beans, and various potato species. Because these insects are highly mobile and have a broad diet, they can easily migrate between fields and host plants, causing widespread damage to commercial agriculture and home gardens alike.

The life cycle of Amrasca consists of egg, nymph (with five developmental instars), and adult stages. Both nymphs and adults are typically found feeding on the abaxial (underside) surface of leaves. They thrive in warm, humid climates, where multiple overlapping generations can occur throughout the growing season, significantly increasing population density.

The damage caused by Amrasca is primarily due to the extraction of plant sap and the injection of saliva during feeding. This leads to characteristic symptoms known as "hopper burn," where leaves curl, turn yellow at the margins, and eventually wither and drop. Furthermore, their feeding activity can introduce viral diseases into the plant host, which often results in more severe yield loss than the direct feeding alone.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that focuses on prevention and timely intervention. Key strategies include:

• Field sanitation to eliminate alternative weed hosts.
• Monitoring pest density using yellow sticky traps to time applications.
• Strategic application of systemic insecticides when thresholds are exceeded.
• Utilizing biological control agents and resistant plant varieties where available.
