Description

The cotton leafhopper (Amrasca biguttula) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Cicadellidae family. It is a highly destructive sucking pest known for its significant impact on agricultural production, particularly in warm climates where it can complete multiple generations annually.

This insect is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plant hosts. While it is primarily recognized as a major pest of cotton, it also causes severe economic damage to vegetables such as okra, eggplant, tomatoes, beans, and potatoes, leading to substantial yield losses across different crop types.

The biological cycle of this pest consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females oviposit into the leaf veins or petiole tissues. The nymphs, which are similar in appearance to the adults but smaller and wingless, feed actively on the underside of leaves. The entire life cycle can be completed in approximately two to three weeks under optimal conditions.

Feeding damage is characterized by the extraction of phloem sap. As the leafhoppers feed, they inject toxic saliva, which causes the leaf margins to curl downwards, turn yellow, and eventually become scorched or necrotic. This condition, referred to as 'hopper burn,' severely disrupts photosynthesis and hinders plant development.
