Egyptian grasshopper
Anacridium
Description
The Egyptian grasshopper (Anacridium aegyptium) is a prominent member of the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. As one of the largest grasshoppers in the Mediterranean region, it is easily recognized by its robust body size, which can exceed 70 mm in length, and the distinctive vertical black stripes on its compound eyes.
This species is a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a wide range of botanical hosts. It is particularly notorious for damaging fruit trees, such as citrus, olive, and fruit orchards, as well as grapevines and various ornamental plants. While it does not typically form massive migratory swarms like other locust species, it can cause localized but severe economic damage in agricultural settings.
The biology of the Egyptian grasshopper follows an incomplete metamorphosis cycle: egg, nymph, and adult. Adults overwinter in sheltered locations, becoming active in the spring when they lay eggs in the soil. The nymphs emerge and undergo several molting stages, with their feeding intensity increasing significantly as they approach the adult stage during the summer months.
The primary damage inflicted by this pest is the defoliation of host plants. With their robust mandibles, both nymphs and adults consume large portions of leaf tissue, often leaving only the midribs behind. This extreme herbivory reduces the plant's capacity for photosynthesis, stunts overall growth, and can significantly decrease fruit yields, particularly in young or stressed orchards.
Managing populations of this grasshopper requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:
- Regular field scouting to detect nymphs and prevent population spikes.
- Tillage practices during the egg-laying period to disturb and destroy egg pods.
- Application of selective insecticides targeting nymphal stages when necessary.
- Promotion of natural predators such as birds and parasitoid wasps within the orchard.
- Installation of protective netting for high-value crops in highly infested zones.
