The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is a species of the order Anseriformes and the family Anatidae. In an agricultural context, this waterfowl is recognized as a pest capable of causing significant economic losses, particularly in regions where farmland is adjacent to wetlands, rivers, or irrigation canals.
Mallards primarily cause damage to cereal crops, including wheat, barley, oats, and rice fields. The risk is highest during two specific phenological stages: the emergence of young seedlings in the spring and the milky-ripe stage of grain development, when maturing crops become a highly accessible and energy-rich food source for local duck populations.
The biology of the Mallard is characterized by seasonal migration and a strong reliance on aquatic habitats for nesting and roosting. As omnivorous birds, they exhibit opportunistic feeding behavior. During the post-breeding season, Mallards aggregate in large flocks, which significantly increases their impact on nearby agricultural lands as they move daily between water bodies and foraging sites.
The nature of damage includes both direct consumption and physical destruction of crops. Mallards forage by trampling delicate seedlings and grazing on green shoots, which leads to thinning of the crop stand. During the harvesting phase, flocks can cause substantial grain loss by grazing on heads of grain, potentially leading to significant reductions in commercial yields and crop quality.
