Garganey

The Garganey (Anas querquedula) is a small dabbling duck species belonging to the order Anseriformes and the family Anatidae. In the context of intensive agriculture, particularly in rice-producing regions, this bird is recognized as an opportunistic pest that can inflict significant economic losses during the early stages of crop development.

The primary agricultural threat involves rice cultivation. As Garganeys are migratory birds, their arrival often coincides with the sowing season in temperate regions. Flocks of ducks forage on newly flooded rice paddies, consuming soaked seeds and pulling out young seedlings, which drastically reduces plant density and necessitates costly replanting operations for farmers.

Their biological cycle dictates their interaction with crops. Following their spring migration, these birds seek shallow wetlands for feeding and breeding. Newly flooded agricultural land provides a rich, easily accessible source of nutrition. Because Garganeys are highly social birds, they often feed in groups, which amplifies the cumulative impact on a single field within a short timeframe.

Beyond the direct consumption of seeds, the damage manifests in the disruption of the field's micro-environment. The activity of feeding flocks causes physical damage to the delicate soil structure and water level regulators in irrigation ditches. Furthermore, the fouling of water with organic waste can negatively affect the chemical quality of the water, hindering healthy rice development.
