Description

Systematic position. The South American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus, belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is considered a major quarantine pest throughout South and Central America, posing a significant threat to global fruit production due to its ability to infest a wide array of commercially important fruits.

Host plants. This species is highly polyphagous, capable of infesting over 100 different plant species. Primary hosts include citrus, peaches, apples, pears, coffee, and several tropical fruits like mango and papaya. Its wide host range makes it particularly difficult to manage in regions with diversified fruit farming systems.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female pierces the skin of a ripening fruit to deposit eggs. Larvae develop inside the fruit, feeding on the pulp. Upon maturity, the larvae emerge from the fruit and drop to the soil to pupate. Under optimal conditions, the species can complete its generation in a relatively short period, leading to multiple overlapping generations per year.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The primary economic damage is caused by the larval feeding, which destroys the internal fruit tissue. This causes premature fruit drop, rot, and renders the fruit unfit for fresh consumption or export. Infested fruits are highly susceptible to secondary bacterial and fungal infections, which further degrade the crop's quality and market value.

Control measures. Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring using pheromone or protein bait traps to track adult fly populations.
  • Sanitation practices, specifically the prompt collection and destruction of fallen or infested fruits to eliminate larval reservoirs.
  • Bait spraying with selective insecticides to target adult flies before they oviposit.
  • Implementation of biological control agents and sterile insect technique (SIT) in specific orchard programs.
