Systematic position: Anastrepha lutea is a member of the Diptera order, specifically the Tephritidae family. Often referred to as a type of fruit fly, this species is recognized as a significant quarantine pest in various regions, posing a direct threat to the quality and volume of fruit production.

Host crops: The pest is primarily associated with fruit-bearing plants in the Myrtaceae family. Its main host is the guava (Psidium guajava), although it exhibits the potential to infest other related tropical and subtropical fruits. Because of this host preference, it represents a substantial challenge for producers of exotic fruits and local orchard owners.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Anastrepha lutea consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females pierce the rind of developing fruit to lay eggs inside the flesh. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the fruit interior until they reach maturity. After completing their development, the larvae drop to the ground and burrow into the soil to pupate.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: Larval feeding is the primary cause of crop loss. As larvae tunnel through the fruit, they destroy the pulp and introduce pathogens, which leads to premature ripening, decay, and abscission of the fruit. Heavily infested harvests often become commercially worthless, leading to severe economic losses for growers.
