Description
Anastrepha recurcauda is a destructive pest belonging to the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. As a member of the diverse Anastrepha genus, it is closely related to several highly invasive fruit fly species, making it a significant subject of phytosanitary concern for countries importing produce from Central and South America.
This pest primarily infests a variety of tropical and subtropical fruit crops. It poses a substantial threat to species within the Myrtaceae family and other commercially grown fruits. The larvae develop internally within the fruit, consuming the flesh and rendering the harvest unsuitable for commercial use or human consumption.
The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use their sharp ovipositor to deposit eggs beneath the skin of ripening fruits. Once hatched, the larvae burrow into the fruit to feed. Upon completing their larval development, they exit the fruit to pupate in the soil beneath the host tree, where they await favorable conditions to emerge as adults.
The economic impact stems from total fruit spoilage and secondary infection. As larvae create tunnels, they introduce bacteria and fungi, leading to rot. Affected fruits often drop prematurely from the tree, resulting in massive yield losses for farmers and preventing the export of fruit due to stringent international quarantine regulations.
Effective management relies on a combination of strict quarantine inspections and field monitoring using pheromone traps. Control measures include:
- Application of contact-stomach insecticides targeting adult flies.
- Implementation of biological control agents and sterile insect technique (SIT).
- Sanitation practices, specifically the immediate collection and disposal of fallen fruit to break the larval life cycle.
