Description
The sapodilla fruit fly (Anastrepha serpentina) is a significant pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. It is widely recognized as a serious economic threat to tropical fruit cultivation, particularly in regions where its host plants are grown extensively.
This species primarily infests fruits belonging to the Sapotaceae family. Key host plants include sapodilla, star apple (caimito), and lucuma. The female fly selectively targets ripening fruit, using its ovipositor to deposit eggs beneath the skin, which serves as a protective nursery for the developing larvae.
The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae tunnel into the fruit, consuming the pulp. After completing their development, the larvae exit the fruit and drop to the ground to pupate in the soil, emerging later as adults to restart the reproductive cycle.
Economic damage caused by Anastrepha serpentina is substantial. Infested fruits undergo rapid decay due to larval feeding and subsequent secondary infections by bacteria and fungi. This results in significant yield losses, as the fruit becomes unmarketable and often drops from the tree prematurely.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Essential measures include the deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity, rigorous sanitation practices to remove and destroy fallen infested fruit, and the targeted use of systemic or contact insecticides when population thresholds are exceeded.
