Anastrepha superflua is a dipteran pest belonging to the Tephritidae family, commonly known as fruit flies. It is recognized as a significant threat in agricultural landscapes where host fruits are grown, as the presence of this species can trigger strict quarantine regulations and trade restrictions on international fruit exports.

The host range of Anastrepha superflua includes various fruits that are essential for commercial horticulture. The larvae represent the primary damage stage, as they bore directly into the fruit pulp, consuming the internal tissues and making the fruit completely unsuitable for human consumption or processing.

The life cycle encompasses four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult female uses her ovipositor to insert eggs beneath the skin of the fruit. Larval development occurs inside the fruit, which often leads to the fruit dropping prematurely to the ground, where the larvae exit to pupate in the soil.

The economic impact of this pest is severe due to direct crop loss and the associated costs of quarantine treatments. Heavily infested fruits show signs of internal decay and premature softening. Furthermore, the tunneling behavior of the larvae creates pathways for opportunistic pathogens, leading to secondary bacterial and fungal infections that rot the fruit tissue.
