Anastrepha woodi

Anastrepha woodi is a destructive insect pest belonging to the family Tephritidae, order Diptera. As a member of the genus Anastrepha, this species is recognized as a significant quarantine threat in various regions globally due to its potential to cause severe economic losses in the fruit production industry.

The primary hosts of this pest include a wide variety of tropical and subtropical fruit-bearing plants. The larvae specifically target the fruit flesh, rendering the produce unmarketable and susceptible to secondary infections caused by bacteria or fungi that thrive in the damaged tissues.

The life cycle of the fruit fly proceeds through four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use their ovipositors to pierce the skin of ripening fruits and deposit eggs inside. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the interior tissue, creating tunnels that eventually lead to the premature softening, browning, and dropping of the infested fruit.

Damage caused by Anastrepha woodi is primarily internal, which makes early detection difficult during visual inspections of fresh produce. Extensive larval feeding compromises the structural integrity of the fruit, causing rot. Infestations lead to direct yield loss and strict trade restrictions imposed by phytosanitary authorities on affected regions.
