Woodley fruit fly

Anastrepha woodleyi is a species of fruit fly belonging to the Tephritidae family, within the order Diptera. This species is part of a genus of significant agricultural importance, known for infesting various fruits. As a specialized pest, its presence in orchards poses a serious threat to fruit production, making it a subject of constant monitoring by agricultural authorities to prevent its accidental spread.

The primary hosts of this fly include various tropical and subtropical fruit trees. Among the crops most susceptible to damage are guava, mango, and various citrus species. The larvae feed inside the fruit tissue, causing extensive internal damage. This infestation renders the produce commercially non-viable and results in significant financial losses for farmers and exporters of fresh fruit.

The life cycle of Anastrepha woodleyi comprises four main stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult female uses her ovipositor to insert eggs beneath the skin of a ripening fruit. Once hatched, the larvae consume the pulp, creating galleries inside the fruit. Upon reaching maturity, the larvae exit the fruit and drop to the soil, where they undergo pupation before emerging as adults to start a new generation.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by premature fruit drop and internal decomposition. Often, the external surface of the fruit may appear normal, while the inside is riddled with larvae and tunnels, leading to rapid rotting. In commercial orchards, if left unchecked, infestation rates can escalate rapidly, especially during the harvest season when the fruit is most vulnerable to egg-laying.

Management strategies for controlling this pest require a combination of cultural and chemical methods:

• Utilization of pheromone traps for early detection and population tracking.
• Strict sanitation protocols, including the collection and safe disposal of fallen fruits to stop the life cycle.
