Cotton caterpillar moth

Systematic position. The species belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Cosmopterigidae. It is widely recognized as a major pest of cotton, known for causing significant economic losses in agricultural regions with tropical and subtropical climates.

Host crops and damage. While its primary host is cotton (Gossypium), the pest also attacks pomegranate fruits, citrus seeds, and various legumes. Larvae bore into the cotton bolls, feeding on developing seeds and fibers. Such infestation often leads to secondary infections and rot, resulting in significant loss of crop quantity and textile fiber quality.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this moth is synchronized with the development of the host plant. Female moths deposit eggs on the surface of developing fruits or near the boll sutures. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the boll, remaining protected within it throughout their growth stages. Pupation typically occurs within the damaged plant material, allowing the pest to survive between cropping seasons.

Economic impact. The moth is characterized by its ability to complete multiple generations within a single season under favorable weather conditions. The cryptic behavior of the larvae makes them difficult to control with standard contact pesticides, as they remain shielded inside the bolls. This makes early detection vital for preventing widespread damage.

Management strategies. Effective control of Anatrachyntis simplex requires an integrated approach to reduce pest pressure throughout the year:

• Rigorous sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of crop residues post-harvest.
• Implementation of crop rotation to break the moth’s reproductive cycle.
• Deployment of pheromone-baited traps for population monitoring and precise timing of interventions.
