Description

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a parasitic nematode belonging to the order Strongylida and the family Angiostrongylidae. Within an agronomic framework, it is considered a significant biological hazard associated with invasive mollusks that infest diverse agricultural systems, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.

The organism primarily infects rats, but its life cycle relies heavily on intermediate hosts, such as slugs and snails (e.g., Achatina fulica). These mollusks consume agricultural produce like lettuce, leafy greens, and various vegetables, inadvertently becoming vectors for the nematode's larvae. The contamination of harvested fresh produce is a major concern for growers and food safety authorities.

The biology of the parasite involves larval development within the tissues or mucus of mollusks. When these mollusks crawl across crops, they leave behind trails containing infective larvae. This contamination poses a direct threat to the safety of edible plants, as the larvae can persist on the foliage, making the produce unsuitable for consumption if not properly washed and processed.

The damage caused is twofold: the physical destruction of crops by mollusk feeding and the economic loss due to sanitary rejection of produce. Farmers often face strict regulatory challenges, as the presence of intermediate hosts on agricultural land can lead to quarantine protocols and restricted market access for fresh vegetables.
