Anguillicola

Systematic position: Anguillicola (predominantly the species Anguillicola crassus) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, family Anguillicolidae. It is a specialized parasite that infests the swim bladder of eels. Although the term "pest" is usually applied to crops, in the context of aquaculture, this organism is a critical pathogen causing significant reductions in the productivity of fish farming operations.

Affected species: The primary host is the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), as well as other anguillid species. The global spread of this parasite is largely attributed to the international trade in live fish. In aquaculture, it leads to severe economic losses as infested fish lose their marketability, experience stunted growth, and become highly susceptible to secondary bacterial or viral infections.

Biology and life cycle: The parasite has a complex life cycle involving intermediate hosts, typically copepods, and sometimes paratenic hosts like other fish. Larvae enter the eel's digestive tract through the consumption of infected intermediate hosts. After ingestion, the larvae migrate through the intestinal wall directly to the swim bladder, where they reach maturity and begin the reproductive phase.

Damage and harmfulness: The nematodes feed on the host's blood, causing severe damage to the swim bladder walls. This results in inflammation, fibrosis, and disruption of the fish's hydrostatic regulation. In severe cases, the swim bladder becomes deformed or entirely non-functional, leading to impaired swimming performance, emaciation, and high mortality rates, particularly in juvenile eels.

Protection and control: Managing this parasite in fish ponds relies heavily on strict veterinary supervision during the introduction of new stock. Key control strategies include:

• quarantine protocols for incoming fish shipments;
• water filtration to prevent the introduction of copepod intermediate hosts;
• application of anthelmintic treatments within fish feed (e.g., levamisole-based compounds);
• sanitary maintenance of pond environments to break the parasite's life cycle.
