Anhinga

The Anhinga (Anhinga) is a genus of waterbirds within the order Suliformes and the family Anhingidae. In the context of intensive aquaculture and commercial fish farming, these birds are frequently categorized as avian pests due to their highly efficient predatory nature, which directly interferes with the economic output of freshwater agricultural facilities.

These birds primarily inhabit shallow freshwater environments. Their range often overlaps with artificial ponds and managed reservoirs used for fish production. Because they are highly skilled swimmers and divers, they can easily access fish populations that are concentrated in confined spaces, making aquaculture facilities prime hunting grounds for them.

The biology of the Anhinga is characterized by a specialized physiology designed for underwater hunting. They lack waterproof feathers, which allows them to dive deeper and remain submerged for longer periods. This unique adaptation enables them to hunt successfully in murky or deep waters. Their reproductive cycle typically occurs in colonial nesting sites near water sources, facilitating sustained foraging pressure throughout the season.

The economic impact of the Anhinga is primarily realized through the predation of juvenile fish. A single bird can consume a significant volume of fish daily, causing substantial losses in biomass for fish farmers.
