Anisolabis

Anisolabis is a genus of insects belonging to the order Dermaptera and the family Anisolabididae. Often identified as a type of earwig, these insects prefer damp, dark environments, spending most of their time in the soil, under mulch, or inside decaying organic matter.

The pest poses a significant threat to various crops, particularly favoring young seedlings and tender vegetables. It is frequently problematic in greenhouse environments where high humidity and abundant irrigation create an ideal microclimate for the insect's colonization and rapid population growth.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. A notable biological trait is maternal care, as females protect their eggs in underground burrows. This behavior significantly increases the survival rate of the offspring in the soil layer.

The damage caused by Anisolabis is primarily due to feeding on the roots, hypocotyls, and lower leaves of the plants. Their nocturnal feeding habits make early detection challenging. The resulting damage can stunt plant growth, cause wilting, and facilitate secondary infections in the damaged tissues.

Effective control measures require an integrated approach including:

• Sanitation practices such as removing leaf litter and debris that provide shelter.
• Frequent soil cultivation to disrupt breeding sites and destroy nest chambers.
• Application of soil-applied insecticides when economic thresholds are exceeded.
• Use of trapping methods, such as damp cardboard or specialized traps, to reduce local populations.
