Description
The genus Anser (geese) belongs to the order Anseriformes and the family Anatidae. In agronomy, they are considered significant pests of field crops, particularly during migration seasons when large flocks descend upon agricultural lands to feed on tender young plants.
Geese primarily target winter cereals such as wheat, rye, and barley. Furthermore, they can cause substantial damage to early spring crops, legumes, and vegetable fields by grazing on shoots, which results in stunted plant growth or total crop loss in heavily grazed areas.
The biology of these birds is marked by their highly social structure and migratory nature. Flocks are extremely mobile and exhibit opportunistic feeding behavior, preferring open agricultural fields where they can forage for green forage while maintaining a clear view of their surroundings for potential predators.
The economic harm caused by geese stems from both direct consumption and physical damage. By repeatedly grazing on the same site, they remove the apical meristem of plants, preventing recovery. Additionally, soil compaction caused by the constant movement of a large flock inhibits plant root development.
Effective protection measures require an integrated approach to discourage the birds from landing. Farmers often employ various deterrents, such as:
- Acoustic devices, including propane cannons and distress call emitters.
- Visual deterrents such as raptor kites or reflective streamers.
- Laser devices for bird harassment.
- Strategic timing of planting or chemical treatments to make crops less palatable.
