Pink-footed goose

The pink-footed goose (Anser brachyrhynchus) is a species of the Anatidae family within the Anseriformes order. While recognized for its ecological role, this bird is frequently categorized as an agricultural pest due to its tendency to aggregate in large flocks on arable land, where it causes significant damage to emerging agricultural crops during migration seasons.

The primary crops vulnerable to pink-footed goose predation include winter cereals such as wheat and barley, as well as newly sown fields of sugar beet and potatoes. The geese are particularly attracted to early-season green shoots, which provide a high-protein diet essential for their energy reserves needed for completing long-distance migratory routes.

Regarding its biology, the species exhibits strong gregarious behavior, congregating in thousands during stopovers. They migrate between their Arctic breeding grounds and their wintering areas, primarily in Northern and Western Europe. This high density of birds on specific agricultural plots can overwhelm natural defenses, leading to rapid depletion of crop biomass within a few days.

The nature of damage is characterized by grazing, where geese consume leaves and stems down to the soil surface, causing severe stunting or total plant mortality. Furthermore, their webbed feet cause significant soil compaction, and their excrement alters soil nutrient composition locally, which can affect the subsequent development of surviving plants within the damaged field areas.

Effective mitigation strategies are essential to minimize economic losses. Integrated bird management programs typically include the following:

• Use of automated acoustic devices like gas cannons to disrupt feeding.
