Description

The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is the sole surviving member of the family Antilocapridae. While ecologically important, it is often identified as a major pest in agricultural regions where its natural range overlaps with commercial farming, leading to significant grazing damage on productive land.

Pronghorns primarily damage cereal crops, winter wheat, and high-value forage crops such as alfalfa. Due to their tendency to forage in large groups, a single herd can deplete a field of its green biomass in a very short amount of time, resulting in substantial yield loss.

Regarding their biology, pronghorns are highly adaptable ungulates. Their breeding season and migratory patterns directly correlate with the growth cycles of crops. During harsh winters or dry summers, they migrate towards cultivated fields, finding the succulent, fertilized crops to be an ideal food source compared to native grasses.

The damage caused is twofold: direct consumption of foliage and mechanical damage. Grazing stunts the growth of plants, while heavy hoof traffic causes soil compaction and destroys young seedlings, which often necessitates costly replanting of the affected agricultural areas.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies to deter pronghorns without causing them harm. These include perimeter fencing designed to allow small wildlife passage while excluding herds, the use of scare devices, and the careful management of adjacent lands to encourage foraging away from sensitive high-value crops.
