Description

Apanteles diparopsidis is a specialized species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Braconidae, order Hymenoptera. Unlike many agricultural pests, this organism acts as a beneficial parasitoid that naturally regulates populations of harmful Lepidopteran larvae within various cropping systems.

The primary host for this parasitoid is Diparopsis castanea, commonly known as the Sudan bollworm. The wasp has evolved a highly specific search behavior to locate these larvae, which are significant pests that cause extensive damage to cotton bolls and reduce overall crop yields.

The life cycle begins when the female wasp oviposits into the body of the host larva. The developing larva of the parasitoid feeds internally, consuming non-vital tissues first to keep the host alive as long as possible. Once the parasite matures, it emerges from the host to pupate, usually within a characteristic white or yellowish silk cocoon.
