Spruce apanteles

Apanteles tedellae is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Braconidae (order Hymenoptera). In forestry, this species is recognized for its role as a parasitoid of various lepidopteran larvae, specifically those that feed on spruce trees, such as the spruce cone moth (Dioryctria abietella) and certain leafrollers.

The insect primarily attacks coniferous forests, targeting the larvae of pests that damage spruce needles and cones. The biological relationship between this wasp and its host is a critical component of the natural pest control system within coniferous ecosystems, as the development of the wasp larva leads to the eventual death of the herbivorous host.

The life cycle involves the female wasp locating a suitable host larva and ovipositing directly into its body. Inside the host, the wasp larvae feed on non-essential tissues before pupating.
