Description

Systematic position: The Ringlet (lat. Aphantopus hyperantus) belongs to the Nymphalidae family, order Lepidoptera. While often appreciated for its natural beauty, in agricultural contexts, its larvae are considered minor pests of grass-based crops and pasturelands throughout its range in Eurasia.

Target crops: The larvae primarily feed on various grass species (Poaceae). They are commonly found on Poa, Festuca, and Dactylis species. In commercial agriculture, they can cause damage to perennial forage crops, permanent pastures, and occasionally invade margins of cereal fields.

Biology and life cycle: This species is univoltine, meaning it has one generation per year. Adults are active from June to August. Females lay eggs randomly among host grasses. The larvae undergo several instars and overwinter as partially grown larvae at the base of the grass clumps, resuming feeding in the spring before pupating.

Damage and economic impact: The damage is exclusively caused by larvae. They feed on leaves at night, leaving irregular notches on the leaf margins. High population densities can lead to significant defoliation of grasslands, reducing the yield and quality of fodder for livestock, which is of economic concern in intensive farming areas.
