Description
Aphidius is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the family Braconidae. In agriculture, it is strictly classified as a beneficial entomophage, not a pest, as it acts as a primary biological control agent against various species of aphids that attack greenhouse and field crops.
Taxonomically, the genus is part of the order Hymenoptera. These insects have evolved to be highly efficient at locating aphid colonies. They detect specific chemical signals (volatiles) released by plants in response to aphid feeding, allowing the female wasp to find and parasitize aphid clusters even at very low densities.
The life cycle of Aphidius follows a typical parasitoid pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female wasp inserts an egg into the aphid's body. The developing larva feeds internally, eventually killing the host. The aphid then turns into a tanned, swollen structure known as a «mummy», providing a safe shelter for the developing wasp pupa before the adult emerges through an exit hole.
The damage caused by Aphidius is exclusively restricted to aphid populations, which are serious pests of vegetables, flowers, and fruit crops. By reducing aphid numbers, these wasps prevent the spread of viral diseases often transmitted by aphids and mitigate the direct feeding damage to plant foliage.
To implement an effective management strategy using Aphidius, follow these essential practices:
- Introduce wasps preventatively as soon as the first aphids are detected.
- Avoid the use of broad-spectrum synthetic insecticides that can kill the parasitoid population.
- Ensure greenhouse climate conditions (humidity and temperature) are conducive to wasp flight and reproduction.
- Monitor plants for the presence of golden or brown mummified aphids as a sign of successful parasitism.
