Taxonomically, this species is categorized as a specialized parasitoid. Adult wasps possess an exceptional ability to locate aphid colonies by detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by plants in response to aphid feeding. This mechanism ensures that the parasitoids can effectively suppress aphid populations on crops such as cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, and ornamental flowers.

The biology of Aphidius colemani is defined by its endoparasitic lifestyle. The female wasp inserts an egg into the aphid's body using her ovipositor. The larva consumes the aphid from the inside. As it matures, the larva spins a cocoon within the aphid's exoskeleton, turning the pest into a characteristic golden-brown 'mummy'. The adult wasp then emerges through a small hole in the mummy's cuticle.

In agricultural practice, this parasitoid is essential for controlling major pests like the cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) and the peach-potato aphid (Myzus persicae). The efficacy of this biological control agent is marked by the presence of numerous mummified aphids on leaves, which serves as a biological indicator of the parasitoid's established presence and successful suppression of the pest population.
