Description

Aphidius matricariae is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Braconidae, order Hymenoptera. Contrary to being a pest, it is a highly valuable biological control agent extensively used in greenhouses and nurseries to manage aphid populations naturally without relying on chemical pesticides.

The host range of Aphidius matricariae is quite broad, effectively targeting several aphid species such as Myzus persicae (green peach aphid) and Aphis gossypii (melon/cotton aphid). These aphids are common pests that damage vegetable, fruit, and ornamental crops by sucking plant sap and transmitting viral diseases.

The life cycle begins when the female wasp searches for aphid colonies using sensory receptors to detect honeydew and volatile compounds released by stressed plants. Once a host is found, the female inserts a single egg into the aphid's body. The wasp larva then develops internally, feeding on the host's tissues while keeping the vital organs intact until the final stage.

The damage caused by the parasitoid is exclusively targeted at the pest population. After the larval development is complete, the aphid is killed and transformed into a golden-brown shell known as a "mummy." The adult wasp then emerges through a circular hole cut in the mummified cuticle of the dead aphid, ready to mate and seek new hosts.

To maximize the effectiveness of this natural predator in an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, consider the following points:

  • Avoid applying broad-spectrum insecticides that are harmful to beneficial Hymenoptera.
  • Introduce the wasps early in the season or as soon as the first aphids are spotted.
  • Monitor for mummies to verify the establishment and efficacy of the parasitoid population in the greenhouse environment.
