Note: In agronomic and entomological science, Aphidius nigripes is not a plant pest. It is a highly effective beneficial parasitoid wasp belonging to the family Braconidae (order Hymenoptera). Its primary function is to suppress populations of various aphid species that damage crops in both open fields and greenhouses.
The biology of Aphidius nigripes is characterized by endoparasitism. The adult female wasp searches for aphid colonies and uses its ovipositor to lay a single egg inside the body of an aphid. The developing wasp larva feeds on the internal tissues of the aphid, which gradually leads to the host's death as the larva matures.
The life cycle progresses through the egg, larval, and pupal stages within the aphid's exoskeleton. As the parasitoid prepares to pupate, the aphid becomes a rigid, swollen structure commonly known as a "mummy." The adult wasp later emerges through a small circular hole cut into the mummy, ready to mate and seek new hosts to continue the life cycle.
