Aphidius phorodontis is a specialized species of parasitic wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Braconidae. It is widely recognized in professional agriculture as a key biological control agent, specifically targeting aphid populations that threaten high-value commercial crops.
This parasitoid primarily infests various aphid species found on solanaceous and cruciferous crops. By naturally limiting the reproduction of aphids, Aphidius phorodontis helps prevent plant damage such as leaf curling, stunted growth, and the transmission of viral diseases vectored by aphids.
The biological cycle of this insect involves internal parasitism. The adult female wasp uses her ovipositor to deposit an egg inside the aphid's body. The developing larva consumes the host from the inside, eventually killing it. The total developmental time is highly temperature-dependent, typically ranging between two weeks under greenhouse conditions.
A hallmark of its presence in the field or greenhouse is the formation of aphid "mummies." These are the dried, swollen, and discolored husks of aphids that have been consumed by the parasitoid larva. Once the wasp matures, it emerges through a characteristic circular exit hole, immediately resuming the hunt for new hosts.
