Aphidius sonchi

Aphidius sonchi is a beneficial species of parasitoid wasp belonging to the family Braconidae and the order Hymenoptera. Contrary to being a plant pest, this insect acts as a natural biological control agent, playing a critical role in agricultural ecosystems by limiting the population growth of various aphid species that threaten vegetable and field crops.

This parasitoid is particularly effective against aphids that colonize diverse host plants, including members of the Asteraceae family and common vegetable crops. This stage is easy to observe in field conditions, appearing as a swollen, discolored aphid carcass.

By parasitizing the aphids, the wasp causes the host to stop feeding and reproducing shortly after the initial attack, which significantly reduces the spread of damage across the crop foliage.
