Description

The willow aphid (Aphis farinosa) is a member of the family Aphididae, order Hemiptera. It is easily recognized by the presence of a white, powdery wax secretion that covers the insect's body, providing it with a distinctive dusty appearance which serves as protection against desiccation and predators.

This species specializes in feeding on various species of willow (Salix). The aphids typically colonize the undersides of leaves and young, tender shoots. They are most commonly found in damp areas or in gardens and nurseries where host plants are densely planted and provide high nutritional value.

The life cycle of the willow aphid involves several generations throughout the growing season. They overwinter as eggs laid on the bark of willow branches. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices (stem mothers), which initiate the spring colonies. By mid-summer, winged forms emerge to disperse and infest new host plants.

Damage is characterized by the curling and twisting of terminal leaves, stunted shoot growth, and a general decline in the plant's aesthetic value. Furthermore, the aphids excrete large quantities of honeydew. This sticky substance encourages the growth of sooty mold, which blocks light and impairs photosynthesis, causing further stress to the tree.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Pruning and destroying heavily infested tips can help reduce local populations. Biological control is highly effective, as the aphid is preyed upon by ladybeetles, lacewing larvae, and hoverflies. When chemical intervention is necessary, systemic insecticides applied during the early infestation stage yield the best results.
