The strawberry root aphid (Aphis forbesi) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily targets strawberry plants, making it a common concern for berry growers worldwide. Despite its name, it can be found on various aerial parts of the plant, including leaves and stems, depending on the stage of infestation.
The primary hosts for this species are cultivated and wild strawberries. By piercing the plant tissues and feeding on the phloem sap, the aphid removes essential nutrients, leading to stunted growth, reduced berry size, and lower overall yields. If left unmanaged, heavy infestations can severely weaken the plant structure.
The lifecycle of Aphis forbesi is complex, often involving both sexual and asexual reproduction phases. They typically overwinter as eggs, which are deposited on the host plant or near the root zone. In the spring, these eggs hatch into stem mothers, starting a series of generations that increase rapidly in population as temperatures rise.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Growers should prioritize the selection of virus-free nursery stock to prevent initial outbreaks. Early scouting is critical; if populations reach economic thresholds, application of systemic insecticides may be necessary. Additionally, fostering natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps can help maintain aphid numbers at manageable levels.
