Systematic position. The Aphis funicularis, commonly associated with the genus Cuscuta, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized aphid species that exhibits a high degree of host specificity, primarily concentrating its feeding activity on parasitic weeds, which makes it a unique object of agricultural study.

Host plants. The primary host for Aphis funicularis is the dodder plant (Cuscuta spp.). While these aphids primarily target the weed, their presence can be observed on various crop plants if the dodder has infested the field. The aphids exert direct pressure on the parasitic weed, but their colonization of crops can be problematic in high-density outbreaks.

Biology and life cycle. This species follows a typical aphid life cycle involving both parthenogenetic and sexual reproduction phases. During the growing season, exponential population growth is achieved through asexual reproduction of females. The ability to produce wintering eggs ensures the survival of the species during cold periods, allowing for rapid colonization of host plants in the early spring.

Damage and harmfulness. Feeding by Aphis funicularis causes significant mechanical damage to the host plant's phloem tissue. The extraction of sap leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and structural deformation of shoots. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which drastically impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity and reduces the overall quality of the agricultural produce.
