Description

Taxonomy: The soybean aphid (Aphis glycines) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized invasive pest that has become a major economic threat to soybean production across various continents, characterized by its rapid colonization ability.

Host Crops: Soybean (Glycine max) is the primary host crop during the growing season. The aphid utilizes buckthorn species (Rhamnus spp.) as an overwintering host, where it remains in the egg stage during winter months before migrating to soybeans in the spring.

Biology and Life Cycle: The life cycle involves both sexual and asexual reproduction. After hatching in the spring, successive generations of wingless females are produced on buckthorn and then soybean through parthenogenesis, allowing for explosive population growth. When conditions become unfavorable, winged forms are produced to facilitate migration to new host plants.

Damage and Impact: Damage is caused by nymphs and adults feeding on plant sap. Feeding activity leads to reduced plant vigor, stunted growth, pod abortion, and significant yield losses.
