The sunflower aphid (Aphis helianthi) is a member of the order Hemiptera, family Aphididae. It is a significant pest that primarily targets members of the Asteraceae family. Known for its distinct host-alternating behavior, this aphid species poses a consistent threat to sunflower crops across many agricultural regions, impacting both commercial yields and seed quality.
The primary host for this pest is the cultivated sunflower, though it also thrives on various wild species within the Asteraceae family. These wild hosts often serve as essential reservoirs, allowing the aphid population to persist in the landscape even when sunflowers are not currently in the active growing stage.
