Chicory aphid

The chicory aphid (Aphis intybi) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest that specifically targets plants within the Asteraceae family, with a strong preference for chicory (Cichorium intybus) and related species, causing significant stress to these crops.

The biology of Aphis intybi is characterized by a complex life cycle. It typically overwinters in the egg stage on the remnants of host plants. With the arrival of favorable spring temperatures, the eggs hatch into nymphs, which rapidly establish colonies on the tender young leaves and flower stalks through parthenogenetic reproduction.

The damage caused by this aphid is primarily due to the extraction of sap from the plant's vascular system. This process results in leaf curling, yellowing, and stunted plant growth. Furthermore, the aphid secretes honeydew, which serves as a medium for sooty mold growth, effectively blocking sunlight and reducing the plant's photosynthetic capability.

Beyond direct feeding damage, the chicory aphid is a known vector for various viral diseases. The introduction of these pathogens into a healthy crop can be far more devastating than the direct damage caused by the insects themselves, often leading to systemic infections that significantly diminish both yield quality and quantity.
