The buckthorn aphid (Aphis nasturtii) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its ability to transmit various plant viruses, which often causes more damage than the direct feeding of the insects themselves.
This species primarily attacks potato crops, sugar beets, cruciferous vegetables, and various ornamental plants. By colonizing the undersides of leaves and developing shoots, the aphid effectively drains the plant's vital nutrients, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields.
The lifecycle of the buckthorn aphid is heterocious, meaning it requires two different hosts to complete its life cycle. The damage caused by these aphids includes leaf curling, discoloration, and the secretion of honeydew. This sugary substance fosters the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight from the leaf surface and disrupts the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently.
