The blackberry aphid (Aphis ruborum) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest that thrives on various species of the Rubus genus. Understanding its lifecycle is crucial for managing infestations in both commercial orchards and home gardens.
This aphid primarily attacks blackberry and raspberry plants. They are typically found in dense clusters on the undersides of leaves, young shoots, and around flower buds. By sucking sap from these vital parts of the plant, they drain the energy reserves that are necessary for healthy growth and fruit production.
The life cycle involves overwintering as eggs on the canes of host plants. Once spring arrives, these eggs hatch into stem mothers, which start the rapid cycle of reproduction.
