The broom aphid (Aphis sarothamni) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest primarily targeting leguminous plants, such as Cytisus (broom) and Genista species. While it is often associated with ornamental shrubs, its presence can also affect leguminous crops, leading to significant physiological stress in the host plants during the growing season.

The biology of this aphid is characterized by high reproductive rates and the formation of dense, localized colonies. These insects prefer the succulent tissues of terminal shoots and developing flower buds, where they feed on phloem sap. Like many aphid species, Aphis sarothamni utilizes a combination of asexual reproduction during spring and summer to rapidly increase population density.

The life cycle typically includes an overwintering stage as eggs, which are deposited on the bark or near the buds of host plants. With the arrival of warmer spring temperatures, these eggs hatch into fundatrices. Through the summer, the population is maintained via parthenogenesis, producing multiple generations. Winged adults, or alatae, play a crucial role in dispersal to new host plants once the colony reaches a high density.

Damage caused by the broom aphid is multifaceted. Feeding activity leads to severe leaf curling, stunted shoot development, and sometimes the chlorosis of leaves. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and impairs photosynthesis. Severe infestations can cause flower bud abortion, directly reducing the plant's reproductive potential.

Pest management strategies should be integrated to minimize crop impact. Cultural practices, such as maintaining healthy plant vigor through balanced fertilization and weeding, are essential. Monitoring for the first signs of infestation is critical. In cases where the population exceeds acceptable levels, applications of insecticidal soaps or systemic pesticides are recommended. Encouraging natural predators, such as ladybird beetles and lacewings, provides a sustainable form of biological control.
