Description

The viburnum aphid (Aphis viburni) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a monophagous species primarily associated with viburnum shrubs, where it establishes large colonies on the undersides of young leaves and soft stems.

The host range is essentially limited to the genus Viburnum. These aphids are particularly destructive during the early growing season when the plant tissue is tender and rich in nutrients required for the rapid reproduction of the aphid population.

Regarding its biology, the species survives the winter in the egg stage, deposited in the bark crevices near the dormant buds. With the arrival of spring, eggs hatch into stem mothers, which produce subsequent generations of wingless and winged adults throughout the spring and early summer. The presence of winged forms facilitates the colonization of adjacent shrubs.

The damage caused by Aphis viburni is characterized by severe curling, twisting, and yellowing of the leaves. As the aphids extract plant sap, they inject saliva that causes the foliage to become distorted. Beyond the physical damage, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaves and hinders the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis.

To effectively manage this pest, monitoring should start early in the spring as buds break. Mechanical control, such as pruning heavily infested tips, can be helpful for small shrubs. For larger infestations, systemic insecticides are the most effective solution. Encouraging natural predators, such as lady beetles (Coccinellidae) and lacewings, is also a recommended long-term strategy for organic garden management.
